The application of this kind of procedure has the advantages of making the fixture design information completely modular and transparent, providing a better match to the working conditions, reducing leadtime, and generally providing a significant enhancement of fixture productivity and economy.17089

1.  Introduction
Production  is  characterised  by  batch-sizes  becoming  smaller
and  smaller  and  by  a  greater  variety of products.  Assembly,
being  the  last  production  step,  is  particularly  vulnerable  to
changes  in  schedules, batch-sizes,  and  product  design.  This
situation  is  forcing  many  companies  to  put  more  effort
into  extensive  rationalisation  and  automation  of  assembly.
Although  the  development  of  flexible fixtures fell  quickly
behind  the  development  of  flexible handling  systems such as
industrial  robots,  there  are,  nonetheless,  promising  attempts
to  increase  the  flexibility  of  fixtures  [1-4].  The  fact  that
fixtures  are  the  essential  product-specific  investment  of  a
production  system intensifies  the  economic necessity  to make
the  fixture  system more  flexible.

special  fixtures,  group  fixtures,  modular  fixtures  and  highly
flexible  fixtures.  Flexible fixtures  are  characterised  by  their
high  adaptability  to  different  workpieces,  and  by  low
changeover time  and  expenditure.
Flexible  fixtures  with  form  variability  are  equipped  with
variable  form  elements  (e.g.  needle-cheek  [5],  multileaf
[3],  and  lamella-cheek  [2]),  modular  workpiece  non-specific
holding- or clamping-elements (e.g.  pneumatic modular  hold-
ing-fixtures  [2]  and  fixture  kits with moveable elements  [2]), or with  fictile  and  hardening media  (e.g.  particulate-fluidised-
bed-fixtures  [6]  and  thermal  clamping-fixtures  [7]).
Independent  of the  flexibility of a  fixture,  several  steps are
required  to  generate  a  fixture  in  which  a  workpiece  is  fixed
for a  production  task.  The  first  step  is  to define  the  necessary
position  of  the  workpiece  in  the  fixture,  based  on  the
unmachined or base part,  and the working features. Following
this,  a  combination of stability planes must be selected. These
stability  planes  constitute  the  fixture  configuration  in  which
the  workpiece  is  fixed  in  the  defined  position,  all  the  forces
