1 Introduction
1.1 Introduction of Pygmalion
Pygmalion is a famous social sarcastic drama written by Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. Pygmalion is originally the name of a sculptor in Roman mythology, who falls in love with his sculpture Galatea. George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion is based on this mythology. It tells about the story of a flower-selling girl who successfully stepped into the upper class with the help of a linguist Mr. Higgins. Just like Galatea, the flower girl Eliza is remade by Mr. Higgins and become an elegant lady at last. However, George Bernard Shaw pointed out the problems which may exist in the Pygmalion effect. Eliza learns not only refined manners, language of the upper class but also the independent thinking. She goes after equality and wishes to be respected by Mr. Higgins. This play gains great popularity and it was once made into a movie.
