I.    Introduction

During the 19th century, there are certain significant people in American literature. One was Ralph Waldo Emerson, a poet, essayist and ideologist, who led Transcendentalist movement; one was Walt Whitman, a poet, essayist and humanist, who was claimed as America's first ‘poet of democracy’; the third was Emily Dickinson, a marvelous poetess in American literary history. Dickinson made a great impact on American literature and she was portrayed as “a powerful and persistent figure in American culture" (Martin 2004:1). Both life experience and poetry of Dickinson are all components of her significant legends. For the legend of her life experience, she was regarded as an eccentric by some of the locals and was regarded as a woman of letters by later readers. Dickinson had a preference for white clothing after puberty and was reluctant to get contact with the outside world. Later in her life, she was even isolated all day long in the house and communicated with only a handful of friends by correspondence. What's more, she stayed single all her life and it was quite rare for a woman to keep single throughout her life at her times. For her poetry, most of her poems were about nature, love, death, eternality, her self-awareness and the resistance against man-dominated reality. Only a few poems were about the society, political events or scientific field. In this sense, Chang Yaoxin argues that “Dickinson explores the inner life of the inpidual". After Emily Dickinson's main works having been published in the late 19th century, her works have always aroused the interest of scholars and readers around the world. Among these criticisms, her works even received unfavorable reviews and skepticism for her having challenged the traditional poetry. Even so her poetry writing competence and wit were widely recognized. 艾米莉•狄金森诗歌的生态女性主义解读:http://www.lwfree.cn/yingyu/20190912/39252.html
